active armed offenders - response

What a week in our beautiful city of Sydney, to see two attacks occur in such a short timeframe, has been tragic . The impact has been heartfelt across the nation and everyone has sent their condolences and love to the families and loved ones affected!!

These types of attacks are rare in Australia. When they happen, it is natural to ask questions like:

What would I have done if I was there?

Do my kids know how to react?

What should I do if something like that happens when I am in a crowded place or at an event?

Research shows that by thinking about and having a plan in place, you are more likely to react confidently in the event of an emergency. There is clear guidance provided within the Crowded Places Guidelines provided for members of the public by the Australian National Security Agency. The advice relates to anyone not involved in the emergency response by response agencies.

Please read and understand the Escape-Hide-Tell Principles of What to do in an Attack. The principles are:

  • Escape - move quickly and quietly away from danger, if it is safe to do so.

  • Hide - stay out of sight and silence your mobile phone.

  • Tell - call the police by dialling Triple Zero (000) when it is safe.

If you own a business there is additional advice for you on the Crowded Places Website:

  • Save and Protect Lives

  • Facilitate Evacuation

  • Contain Threat or Incident

  • Support Emergency Services

You are encouraged to report any activity that you think is suspicious to security or police when you are out and about or in a crowded place, if it is safe to do so.

There is further reading if you are interested in the breakdown of the threat, the national strategy and advice in the Active Armed Offender Guidelines for Crowded Places and the Australia’s Strategy for Protecting Crowded Places from Terrorism 2023

Remember, your safety, is always the number one priority for the emergency services who will be coming to help you. Remember the police will be heightened so avoid quick movements, keep your hands in view and follow all instructions.
